Roger CarsonROGER W. CARSON
Roger Carson is a graduate of the University of Florida and Brown University where he majored in nuclear physics.  Following graduate school, he was employed by the U.S. Navy Research Laboratory Center in Dahlgren, Virginia.  After serving in employment there for 20 years, Carson moved to the U.S. Pentagon where he was assigned to Strategic Planning for the Chief of Naval Operations.

Following his retirement from the U.S. Government, Carson and three other scientists started C&M Corporation, a firm that is involved in research and development of new applications of waste disposal methods.  Carson served as Chief Executive Officer of C&M Inc. until the company started SCIMIST.  He is now CEO of SCIMIST and RCEI.

Mary Smith CarsonMARY SMITH CARSON
Mary Smith Carson retired from the American Gas Association in 1995 and started RCEI, a management services firm.  Carson serves as President of the firm and works in the area of trade association management and public relations. She is a graduate of Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia and received her MBA from Marymount University in Arlington, VA.  Current clients include the American Gas Association, the Hydronics Industry Alliance of the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, Maxitrol Corporation and others.   Carson works with codes and standards organizations and regulatory groups, as well as liaison with home builders, plumbers, inspectors, fire marshals and numerous other trade groups.

Carson serves on the Board of Visitors of Marymount University and until last month, the Steering Committee of the International Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build Board.  She is listed in the Who’s Who in American, Outstanding Young Women of America and has received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Marymount University.   She has been honored by the National Association of Home Builders Women’s Council for her many years as official sponsor of the group and is a member of the AGA Hall of Honor.

James W. FreemanJAMES W. FREEMAN
Jim Freeman brings more than 40 years of utility experience to RCEI.  He has served with two major urban utilities – a water distribution commission and a gas distribution company serving extensive metropolitan areas.  Areas of experience and expertise include application engineering, safety, appliance service and customer services including a call center, credit, collections, meter reading and a correspondence group.  In addition he has served as chief marketing executive to Washington Gas Light Company.  Areas of responsibility included several levels of supervision including chief operations officer of a subsidiary company and later as a corporate officer of the parent company.

DON DENTON
Don Denton served for twenty years as Vice President of Engineering for DESA International.  Following that career, Denton founded Worgas, Inc. as the USA subsidiary of the Italian burner manufacturer, Worgas Bruciatori, Srl.  In mid-2007 he left the corporate world to become a highly experienced consultant in the areas of codes and standards, technical communications, indoor air quality, and combustion.  Also, he now offers computer animations to show engineering and scientific principles.

 Don’s technical expertise, effective communications skills, and results-oriented leadership have made him a driving force in many significant endeavors. They include being the number two planner and designer of the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, the world’s largest construction project at the time.  He holds two patents for his invention of polyurethane foam-insulated water heaters—the nation’s first significant high-efficiency appliances.

 He is a 1971 graduate of the University of Tennessee with dual majors in aerospace and mechanical engineering.   He has also completed numerous graduate courses at several institutions.   Don and Susie, his wife of 36 years, live in Townsend, Tennessee, and have two married sons.

Bruce ThalerBRUCE THALER
Bruce Thaler has been a copywriter for over 28 years. He has written direct mail packages, catalogs, newsletters, brochures, ads, viewbooks, websites, and other materials for such accounts as KeySpan Energy (now part of National Grid), the Hydronics Industry Alliance, the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, Caesars Palace, Tropicana, Doubletree Hotels, Guest Quarters Suite Hotels, Service Corporation International, American International College, Becker College, Fordham School of Law, Marianapolis Preparatory School, Innodata-Isogen, Gifted Child Society, NewTech Direct, Gros-Ite Industries, Integrated Machine Rebuilders, Thermo Conductor Services, and Bonnie Briar Country Club.

Phil MahlaPHILLIP MAHLA
Phil Mahla is currently an independent marketing consultant with over thirty years of progressive marketing, market research, management and sales experience.  Phil accepted early retirement from the American Gas Association in 1998 where he held numerous positions in residential and commercial marketing, market research and national accounts. Phil has a B.S. in Business Administration with a double major in Marketing and Economics from West Virginia University and is a member of numerous energy and construction related organizations.

DEBBY ATTILIIS
Debby Attiliis retired from the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) located in Arlington, VA in 2004. During her more than 30 years with GAMA (now AHRI - Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute), she served as Manager of Accounting & Office Operations and Manager of Human Resources. In addition, Debby was the Program Manager for MACAP (Major Appliance Consumer Action Panel) during the last year that GAMA was a sponsor.  In this capacity she worked closely with both consumers and manufacturers, trying to resolve problems. Shortly after her retirement in 2004, she came on board at RCEI and is the administrative assistant to Mary Carson. She works very closely with the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, Hydronics Industry Alliance and the yearly NAHB International Builders Shows.

Richard F. Topping P.E.RICHARD F. TOPPING P.E.
Mr. Topping, formerly Vice President and Director of Arthur D. Little, Inc., and Director of TIAX LLC, a technology development and consulting firm formed from ADL's Technology and Innovation business, opened RFTopping Consultants LLC in 2006 to provide consulting services to the energy, appliance and HVAC industries.  To date, RFTopping Consultants has provided strategic business consulting and international government relations assistance to a major appliance manufacturer; product planning assistance to an HVAC component manufacturer; worked with RCEI in developing Green guidelines for gas equipment in high efficiency housing; helped the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers develop an approach to challenge a state regulatory attempt to weaken Federal NAECA pre-emption legislation; and for the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (now AHRI) , coordinated an industry response to impending U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations for residential furnaces and boilers. 

Mr. Topping received a B.S.M.E. with honors from Tufts University and an M.S.M.E. from MIT.  He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  He is also a member of two professional societies; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) where he has served on the Refrigerator and Water Heater Technical Committees. He has authored numerous publications and has two patents.

Laura WilliamsLAURA WILLIAMS
Laura Williams is a freelancer whose career spans 30 years in marketing, advertising and communications in the energy, commercial real estate, and retail industries.  As Assistant Vice President, Advertising, and Director of Marketing for The Mills Corporation for seven years, Ms. Williams promoted the company's portfolio of 40+ shopping malls throughout the United States and Canada.  Prior to her position with The Mills, Ms. Williams was Associate Director and Manager of Advertising for the American Gas Association (AGA).  There, she guided and implemented the association's national advertising program to residential, commercial and industrial markets as well as government and opinion leaders.  She also managed the association's cooperative advertising program, developing individual campaigns for a broad roster of manufacturers' brands of gas appliances and equipment.  Ms. Williams' responsibilities at AGA also included work in Consumer Information and Editorial Services.  Ms. Williams has served on the National Advertising Review Board of the Council of Better Business Bureaus as well as on the Board of Directors of the Advertising Club of Washington and Utility Communicators International.  Currently a resident of Arlington, Virginia, Ms. Williams lived for many years in India and Turkey and has traveled extensively throughout the world.  Ms Williams has an M.A. in English, Professional Writing and Editing, from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, and a B.A. in English from Windham College, Putney, Vermont.
